Looking to add a colorful touch to your planters? Create your own spring flower painted terracotta pots with this easy how to!

Who else is ready for spring? While we’re not quite ready to plant outdoors yet here at Two Kids and a Coupon, we are starting to think about our garden and flowers.

We’re tired of the grey and dreary weather that’s been lingering too long this spring and we’re looking forward to the colors of spring.

If you’re also looking to add some color to your home and garden, this fun and kid-friendly craft is a great way to get ready for spring. Using only a few supplies, make these in less than an hour for indoors or outside. These would also make a great homemade Mother’s Day gift idea!

Flower Painted Terracotta Pots

To make this project you will need a clay or terracotta pot, white and a few additional colors of acrylic paint, a pencil and a couple of paint brushes in different sizes.

We used brush sizes 1, 3 and 8 on the pots painted here, but feel free to use whatever you have available.

To get started, select a pot to paint. If needed, clean its outer surface and allow it to dry.

To begin prepping your painted terracotta pots, you’ll want to paint with a base coat of white acrylic paint, making sure it’s not too thick or too thin.

Place a piece of paper or newspaper on your work space to keep it safe from paint.

We used a size 8 paint brush to apply a coat of white acrylic paint on the outer surface of the pot, but use whatever brush you have on hand. Allow the first white paint coat to dry entirely.

After the first white paint coat dries on your painted terracotta pots, apply the 2nd coat. Allow the second coat to dry entirely. The white paint is the base coat of the clay pot painting project.

Once the second coat of white paint is dry, you’ll want to choose the color of acrylic paint you want to apply on the clay pot. For the pots shown we used green and orange acrylic paint.

Apply the paint from either the top side or the bottom side of the clay pot. If necessary, apply a second coat of the selected paint and then allow the coat to dry before proceeding to the next step.

For these painted terracotta pots, we painted daisies, but you can paint any flower as you wish.

To paint the flowers, you’l want to use a smaller paint brush. (We used a size 2 paint brush). Simply work 1 stroke for each petal and paint a flower with 6 petals.

Use a pencil to mark the positions of each flower if you’re having difficulty deciding where to paint every next flower.

Using a smaller paint brush, paint the center of each flower. A size 1 brush was used in our example. Allow the paint to dry completely before using the painted clay pot.

Use different colored acrylic paints for the pot or paint different kinds of flowers for variation. For more affordable planter ideas, be sure to check out our recycled planter herb garden.

We also love these paint pour flower pots as well!
