Bank Holidays In December 2023: After the list of November 2023 bank holidays, it's time for the last month of 2023, and with it comes a new set of bank holidays.

Banks will be closed for 18 days in December 2023 including second and fourth Saturdays and Sundays. As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, banks will be closed on all public holidays with some regional holidays depending on the particular state. Regional holidays are decided by respective state governments.

The first holiday in December 2023 starts from 'Indigenous Faith Day (Arunachal Pradesh)' on Friday, December 01st, and other holidays like Christmas on Monday, December 25th will be observed holidays which are applicable to all banks in India except some states.

Most Indian banks’ functions are regulated by the Reserve Bank of India, and banking schedules and holidays are also governed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulations. Public sector banks and private sector banks both are not working on Sundays and on second and fourth Saturdays.

Under the Negotiable Instruments Act, RBI has declared bank holidays on December 01,04,12,13,14,18,19,25, 26, 27 and 30. Apart from this, there are five Sundays in December falling on December 03, 10, 17, 24, and 31 also on the second and fourth Saturdays on December 09 and December 23.

According to the Reserve Bank's calendar, apart from the weekends, there are 11 bank holidays in December. The central government divided the holidays into three categories, under the Negotiable Instruments Act, of 1881, which include Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday; and Banks' Closing of Accounts.

Banks will be closed on Tuesday, December 12th in Meghalaya on the occasion of Pa-Togan Nengminja Sangma.

7. Bank Holiday on December 13th (Wednesday)- Losoong/Namsoong

Banks will be closed on Wednesday, December 13th in Sikkim on the occasion of Losoong/Namsoong.

8. Bank Holiday on December 14th (Thursday)- Losoong/Namsoong

Banks will be closed on Thursday, December 14th in Sikkim on the occasion of Losoong/Namsoong.

9. Bank Holiday on December 17th (Sunday) - Weekend

Banks across the country will be closed on their weekly off on Sunday, December 17th.

10. Bank Holiday on December 18th (Monday)- Death Anniversary of U SoSo Tham

Banks will be closed on Monday, December 18th in Meghalaya on the death anniversary of U SoSo Tham.

11. Bank Holiday on December 19th (Tuesday)- Goa Liberation Day

Banks will be closed on Tuesday, December 19th in Goa on the occasion of Goa Liberation Day.

12. Bank Holiday on December 23rd (Saturday): Fourth Saturday

Banks across the country will be closed on their weekly off on the fourth Saturday of the month on Saturday, December 23rd.

Banks across the country will be closed on their weekly off on Sunday, December 24th.

Banks will be closed on Saturday, December 30th in Meghalaya on the occasion of U Kiang Nangbah.

Banks across the country will be closed on their weekly off on Sunday, December 31st.

Long weekend holidays in December 2023

In December, there's going to be a long weekend holiday. Across the country, banks will be closed on December 23rd, 24th and 25th. December 23rd is a Second Saturday, the 24th is a Sunday and the 25th is a Christmas celebration. In a few states, banks will also have a holiday on the December 26th and 27th for Christmas Eve.

Types of holidays in India:

National holidays

- National Holidays (Gazetted holidays)which include Republic Day, Independence Day, and Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. On National holidays banks, schools, government offices, and other types of private sectors remain shut across the country.

Government holidays

- Government holidays in India are classified into two types: state government bank holidays and central government bank holidays. State government bank holidays are observed only in the respective state, while central government bank holidays are observed across the country. For example, Himachal Day is a bank holiday in Himachal Pradesh, but it is not a bank holiday in other states. Similarly, Onam is a bank holiday in Kerala, but it is not a bank holiday in other states. On the other hand, Republic Day, Independence Day, and Gandhi Jayanti are all central government bank holidays that are observed across the country.
